What's a girl to do with all her leftover LEDs and yarn? Create top secret yarn bombing missions for friends and send them all over the world, of course! The LEDFlower project combines social networking, regular old mail, and google maps to share tiny episodes of yarnbombing fun internationally and put them on a map.
These LED flowers first appeared as part of a yarn bombing effort around Pittsburgh, PA with the Yarn Over Society. A little bit silly but a whole lot of fun, they just had to be shared. And that's how the #LEDFLoWER project was born. The project aims to connect far away friends with a common yarn and LED filled mission. There was just one rule: “Only do this if you think it’s fun”.
Each participant was mailed a "top secret" kit with parts and instructions for assembly. Everyone assembled their own LEDflower and decide where to plant it. The only requirement was a photo and a tweet to declare the mission done. The hashtag of course, was #LEDFloWER. Each one is added to the map here as missions are completed.
To see the results of the secret missions take a look at this LEDFlower Flickr set.
The images above were taken by Ed at HackPittsburgh.
If you'd like to make your own LEDFlowers (and I think you should!), check out this video from Lynne Bruning and post your photos to the flickr pool.
If you have a secret mission from the previous batches of missions, go out and do it! Missions are still being added to the map as they're completed.
